       to share with students in Tanzania.  This is a wonderful project for kids/students and adults.

15)  Encourage your family, friends and groups/clubs in your community to write postcards for 
       Hearts in Unity to share with students in Tanzania.

16)  Organize a “Gently Used Book Sale” at a school or church in your community.  Ask the
       families to donate children’s books that their children no longer read.  Then, invite the
       students and their families back to the school for a “Book Sale” where they can purchase
       books donated by their fellow students.  Donate the proceeds from the book sale to Hearts
       in Unity to use towards the purchase of textbooks for Tanzanian children.

17)  Help make Swahili/English phrasebooks for the students in Tanzania.

18)  Do you know a teacher at a local elementary, middle or high school?  Have them send us
       their contact information (name, address, phone, email) so that we can be in touch with them
       to share details about our upcoming “Art from the Heart”  student art contest in the
       2012 school year.

18)   Help us promote our “Art from the Heart” student art contest by posting the information
       on online sites (local online newspapers; Craigslist; etc.) seeking contact names at schools.

19)   Organize an “Art Auction” in your community.  Have children or adults create artwork with
        a theme of “Hearts in Unity.”  Invite the students/parents and others in the community to a
        “silent auction” event where they can bid on the local artwork in addition to pictures drawn
        by Tanzanian children (Tanzanian artwork provided by Hearts in Unity).  Donate the auction
        proceeds to Hearts in Unity to help support the children of Tanzania.  Contact us for more

20)   Organize a “Soup Bowl” event.  Contact the art teacher at your local school.  Invite art
        students to make decorative ceramic bowls.  Invite the students/parents and others in the
        community to an event where they can buy a bowl of hot soup for dinner, and then bid on
        the student-made bowls at a “silent auction” with the dinner and auction proceeds to help
        feed the children of Tanzania.

21)   Purchase t-shirts, coffee mugs and other items imprinted with artwork by Tanzanian
        children.

22)   Encourage your family/friends to purchase t-shirts, coffee mugs and other items
        imprinted with artwork by the Tanzanian children supported through Hearts in Unity. 

23)   Your purchase of our “Omba” music CD (with original music by Hearts in Unity co-director
        Roland Maanga) will help support Hearts in Unity projects.

24)   Share the “Omba” music CD link ( www.heartsinunity.org/music.html ) with your family and
        friends (by email, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, etc.) and encourage them to purchase their
        own copy of our music CD as a way to help support the children in Tanzania.

32)   Ask your family/friends to donate unused gift cards for stores (such as Target, Walmart,
        book stores, clothing stores).  Hearts in Unity will use the cards to purchase the items most
        needed for the children of Tanzania.

33)   Help sew a gift of simple fabric school bags for the students in Tanzania.
 
34)   Share our school bag pattern with friends and encourage them to sew school bags.
        Using Facebook is a great way to share information about this project with your friends.

35)   Contact local sewing/quilting groups in your area to encourage others to volunteer to
        make school bags.

36)   Contact the local Girl Scout Council in your area to share information about the Hearts in
        Unity school bag project.  Learning to sew while making school bags is a great way for the
        girls to earn a “sewing” badge.

37)   Contact local fabric stores to request donations of fabric (cotton; cotton/polyester)
        blend fabric (and thread) to use in sewing school bags.  If you receive fabric donations,
        share donated fabric/thread with other sewing volunteers that you locate in your area. 

39)   If you receive fabric donations, pre-cutting the donated fabric into “kits” to give to sewing
        volunteers in your area (pre-cut fabric with instructions).

40)   Offer to be the collection/mailing contact person in your area for school bags sewn by
        others. Mailing school bags to Hearts in Unity in fewer/larger boxes will cost less in postage
        than having individual sewing volunteers mailing multiple smaller parcels. 

41)   Encourage sewing volunteers help offset the shipping costs for the school bags by making
        a financial donation (for both shipping from your location to Wisconsin, and shipping from
        Wisconsin to Tanzania.)

42)   Help us find volunteers to sew school bags in your area by posting volunteer request
        information online (on Craigslist, in online newspapers) and sharing information about the
        school bag project.

43)   Help knit or crochet hats for the children in Tanzania.  Use your favorite pattern, or one
        of the two simple knitting patterns

44)   Share our simple knit hat patterns with friends and encourage them to knit hats.  Using
        Facebook and other social networks is a great way to share information about this project

45)   Contact local knitting groups in your area to encourage others to volunteer to make hats.

52)   Teach a Tanzanian cooking class (we have recipes available!).  Ask each of your guests
        to bring an ingredient, and to make a financial donation to Hearts in Unity as a way to help
        feed the children of Tanzania (suggest a donation amount equal to the cost of a dinner at
        a local restaurant). 

53)   Host a “Rice and Beans Dinner” for your family and friends, and ask your guests to each
        make a donation to feed a Tanzanian child ($30 will feed a child for a month).

54)   Host a “Pancake Breakfast” for your family/friends, and ask your guests to each make a
        donation to help feed the children of Tanzania.  This is a good event for a church group or
        as a community event.

55)   Host a “Spaghetti or Taco Dinner” to benefit Hearts in Unity.  This is a good event for a
        church group or as a community event.  Sell tickets to the event with the proceeds to help
        support the children of Tanzania through Hearts in Unity. 

56)   Work with a local restaurant to set up a “meal promotion” to benefit Hearts in Unity.
        Perhaps the manager/owner of the restaurant will offer a percentage of sales on a specific
        day, or a percentage of sales for customers presenting a special promotional coupon.

57)   Set up a concession stand (candy, snacks, beverages) at a local event (sports/theater
        event at a local school, community event, etc.) with proceeds to benefit Hearts in Unity
        projects. 

58)   Set up a “snack/candy” basket at your place of work.  Purchase snacks and candy
        bars to have available for purchase by your co-workers (e.g. a 50-cent candy bar can be
        sold for $1 with the profits donated to Hearts in Unity).

59)   Help your children set up a lemonade and cookie stand with the proceeds to help support
        the children of Tanzania.

60)   Organize a “Wine Tasting” or “Beer Tasting” event at a local bar or restaurant.  Sell
        tickets to the event with the proceeds to help support the children of Tanzania through
        Hearts in Unity.

61)   Organize a “Bake Sale” at your school, church, or in the community to benefit Hearts in
        Unity projects in Tanzania.

        games or board games.  Have a friendly competition with prizes for the winning players.

68)   Offer to babysit your neighbor’s children so the parents can have a “date night”.  Let them
        know in advance that you plan to donate your “wages” from the child care to Hearts in Unity
        to help the children in Tanzania.
